A little about our work....

Our Philosophy

Inspired by Benedictine spirituality, the Saint Bede Studio is dedicated to providing dignified, beautiful garments for the Rites of the Roman Catholic Church. The Saint Bede Studio was established in 2001, as a "cottage-based" business. Although we are a small firm, we have years of experience in the design and manufacture of vestments and church furnishings. The studio is based in Newcastle NSW, Australia.

The work of our Studio is largely the re-interpretation of ancient and mediaeval designs for modern use. Much consideration goes into all our designs, based on years of research into the history of sacred vestments and using fabrics from all around the world. Our vestments are striking in colour, cut and ornament, but avoid small-scale embroideries which can only be seen at close range.

But we also recognise that parishes and religious orders are not always in a position to pay the prices charged by our competitors. So we try to make our garments affordable.

We provide vestments for both the Ordinary Form and the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite. We do not, however, make vestments in the style of the later Baroque period (sometimes referred to a "Roman" vestments or "fiddlebacks").

We also design decorative schemes and liturgical furnishings in the Romanesque and Gothic styles.
